To DIY or not to DIY

My day unofficially became all about self-publishing when I stumbled across an article in my local newspaper about a Texas woman who self-published her first bunch of novels. Now that's not news by itself but when you add the fact that she became a New York Times Bestseller within a matter of months and that she was courted for a book deal (finally signing with Atria Books after turning them down once), it becomes a miraculous publishing moment. We've seen something like this happen once or twice, most notably with Amanda Hocking who made millions by  self-publishing her paranormal fiction.

Of the hundreds of thousands of people who have self-published, we have fewer than 10 accounts of massive or even mild success. Self-publishing right now is a lot like being a new rap artist who peddles his cds to whomever will buy them from the trunk of his car. The trunk of the self-publishing writer's car just happens to be an Amazon shopping cart, but it's still the same amount of brunt and grunt.

So the question becomes "Do I do it myself or not?"

What you have to understand about most people who self-publish is that they have very specific reasons for doing so. Most self-published writers fall into one of the following categories:

1) They have been rejected by countless traditional publishers.

2) They have not been able to procure an agent.

3) They don't want to split profits at such a low margin.

4) They don't want to contend with possible rejection from agents or publishers and so they never submit their work.

5) Their material is time-sensitive (like a book about a particular political figure that needs to be published before the election).

So when you ask yourself whether or not you want to self-publish, the first thing to consider is which category you fit into.

If category four is your label, you need to get a good support group and build up your confidence. Rejection isn't limited to agents and publishers. Low sales is the form of rejection that nearly every published writer has experienced or will experience. If rejection keeps you from pursuing a particular form of publishing, it will also keep you from continuing on the path of writing once the going gets tough. So buck up and pick a better reason!

If you fall into categories one or two, you may have a good reason to seek self-publishing. It is a lot of work, but if you truly believe in your product, you may have to take the risk. Who knows? You could end up on the NY Times bestseller list and make millions. Don't limit yourself. Again, get a good support system and keep pushing! Also, get a good editor. The real reason you are still unpublished may be because you submit material that has not been professionally edited. It may look good to you, but an editor will catch the mistakes which have been making your potential agents and publishers cringe.

If you are concerned about category three and you really don't want to split your profits so severely, I don't blame you. Published writers receive a percentage of their sales, and that percentage is rarely very high. And until their books sales cover the costs of their advance payment, they don't even see that percentage. That's the bare bones reality. Most published authors don't take home more than 25% of their sales. And their agent takes 10-15% of that. That may sound like a rip-off, but don't underestimate what your representatives actually do. They take on a LOT of work from the tiniest detail of font size to the middle management problems such as marketing the book to the upper level issues of taking a loss if the book fails to succeed in the market. When you decide to self-publish, you take all of that responsibility plus all of the other responsibilities onto your own shoulders. The results could be awesome or awful, depending on a variety of mostly unpredictable factors. The point is that if you want full ownership of the pain as well as the profits, self-publishing may be a good route for you to consider.

If you fall into category five and are publishing time-sensitive material, self-publishing is probably your only option. Unless you're writing a short piece which could fit into a magazine or digest, your publication date will probably be anytime from six months to two years away. That's after you procure proper representation.

There's nothing wrong with self-publishing "just 'cause" or just for fun. After all, that's what Colleen did. But if you're serious about it, take the five categories into consideration. Even if you don't fit into one of them, you should figure out the pain and profit of doing it yourself.

Until the next scene,

P.S. You can self-publish, but self-editing by itself is a mistake. We're here to help when you're ready for the next step

Helpful Writing Tips for the "Next Step"

We hope you've kept chugging away at your WIP (Work in Progress) over the past three weeks. If so, you may feel a bit overwhelmed at the prospects of the next step: submissions, agents, publishers, etc.

Here are a few simple tools to help you figure things out:

1) Your local library or bookstore. When you're seeking publication, one of the greatest resources is a place with a ton of books. Pick out ten of your favorite books. By favorite we mean books that are closely related to your WIP in style, genre, and subject matter. Then research the heck out of them! The publishing company is easy to find. (Hint: It's usually on the first page.) Next you'll want to find out the editor. Usually an author will thank the editor in the acknowledgments. If not, you should lightly e-stalk them on a popular social media platform like Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. Most writers are pretty braggy, and the ones who have agents either mention in their Twitter bio or mention them in tweets and Facebook posts them like it's going out of style.

Once you realize your favorite writer's agent, you can figure out how to get them to rep you.

2) Next you'll want to research the agent. Chuck Sambuchino's Guide to Literary Agents is an invaluable resource (His page on the Writer's Digest website is also really helpful). So is the Writer's Market

3) Agent Query is the easiest way to find agents who meet your criteria because it's a searchable online database. I prefer this tool to narrow down my potential agents list.

4) The problem with being an unknown, unrepped, and uninformed writer is that you've probably got a lot of zeal but not a lot of knowledge about the industry. Maybe you think it's a normal practice for agents to charge you reading and editing fees. (For the record, it's not.) There is exhaustive information on Predators and Editors about writing contests, editors, agents, and of course predators. They fill you in on all the unhealthy practices going on in the industry and all of the potentially safe places to submit your material.

5) Of course, willwriteforlove.com is here to help you! We're going to be providing a lot of querying and submission tips over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more. Be sure to hit us up with any questions you have concerning getting an agent or achieving the Holy Grail of publication by either commenting on blog post (we read them all!) or sending a question by email---> here

You can probably do more than you think. Test your outer limits. The feeling of success that comes from pushing your own boundaries is unparalleled.

3) Take a breather.

You need refreshment just like everyone else. Do something spontaneous with loved ones or drive to the movie theater and watch whatever is about to start playing. Spontaneity has a way of recharging and refreshing our brains.

Day 28- Writing for Love

We don't know about you, but we can almost taste victory from here! You're on day 28 if you've been going from the beginning which means you're almost there! Or you may be on day 15, day 10, day 3, etc. Even if you're on day 1, we've got some advice that you can use to push through to the end.

If you want to taste victory, you have to decide to do only what's important from here on out.

Life is filled with what we term as "needs". Upon closer inspection, we find that they're only "wants", "whims" and "fancies". In other words, they're distractions. If you want to finish this manuscript, see yourself on the back of your published book in Barnes and Noble, or travel the world to promote your pieces, you need to develop a habit of only doing the important stuff.

Right now, decide what's important.

1) Make a list of the day's top five priorities.

2) Memorize that list.

3) Now make the commitment that whatever you do today has to be directly related to accomplishing one of the priorities on your list.

If you can master the art of prioritizing, you'll be unstoppable in the publishing industry and beyond.

Sure, things will creep up on you, but in order to devote a large chunk of time to an event or action it must directly affect something on your list. Whether you know it or not, everything you do affects your list. If you spend two hours watching the Real Housewives of Mars instead of writing your manuscript, your choice affects your priorities- just not in a way that helps you.

This isn't a guilt trip. It's the THREE DAYS LEFT kick in the butt that most of us need around this time.

So let us know if we can help you in any way, and get to work on that priorities list.

One thing that should be on the top of your priorities list is entering our 30 Days of Writing for Love challenge. It's never too late to start, and winning could get you some much needed exposure as a writer. For more information on the contest, check us out here.

Until the next scene,

Day 25- Writing for Love

Wow! You're so close to the end of this writing for love journey. It has been a challenge, for sure. It has been a contest between your fears and your trust, definitely. But who knew it would be a journey??

And you're not just there yet. You haven't arrived at your destination, but you're so close that you can probably feel the victory from here.

If you're not feeling so victorious, we get it. Every writer goes through varying degrees of self-confidence and self-doubt. Will they like it? Will they get it? Will it do well?

All these "wills" kind of kill the fun of it all, but they're not invalid. We've all been there, and if you need a little help to get from "there" to "The End", we'd be happy to send you a little encouragement. Connect with us by filling out the form below. Tell us your concerns, and we'll respond with some writing wisdom. Who knows- it may be the very thing you need to get through "The End" and into your future.

Day 22- Writing for Love

Day 22 is underway, and we hope you've been writing away!

Here's a little motivational scene to kick your writing into high gear:

Picture yourself walking into a Barnes and Noble one day soon. You take in the scene of people chatting and laughing near their favorite section, but then you notice a small crowd gathered around a display. Normally, you would just walk around them, but they're actually blocking the path-- and more people are coming by the second! So you stop behind the crowd, annoyed and ready to move forward. Then you catch a glimpse, really a slither or something that makes your breath catch in your lungs. You know what it is even though you can't see the entire thing. You've been looking at it for months whether in real-time or in your dreams. You wouldn't be able to get it out of your mind if you tried. A smile creeps onto your mouth and spreads over face. It's happening. Finally, after all that work- your book is not only in a major bookstore, but there is a crowd around it. A lady in her mid-thirties starts to read a passage. A college-aged guy chimes in, "Yeah, I heard Oprah say that was her favorite part of the book!" You realize that he's just trying to get cool points for knowing more about the book than anyone else, and just when you're about to laugh at his pompousness, he turns toward you: "Hey!" He turns the book over, and his eyes widen in surprise. "Is this really you??" The crowd turns to see if it's true. Now they're headed your way, and you're trying to think of something to say that's cleverer than any of the great lines in your first published book. Is this really happening?

The real question is: Do you BELIEVE it can really happen?? Believe it or not, it's only going to happen if you believe, because only your faith will cause you to work toward finishing your manuscript. Honestly, the idea has been in your head for long enough. Sure, you've worked on it here and there, but you haven't really put your best foot forward. That can all change today, and you can be one step closer to realizing your dreams! It's up to you. No one can write the book except you. We can help, and we would be happy to do so. We'll do all we can for you. As soon as you decide you're ready to see your dreams come true, let us know.

Another great way to just get started is to participate in our 30 Days of Writing for Love challenge. It's okay to start late. There are eight days left. That means you have a little more than a week to jumpstart your dreams. Request your FREE Will Write For Love Word Counter.

Bonus points: Submit your Word Counter at the end of the contest for a chance at some good, free exposure on willwriteforlove.com.

Until the next scene,

Day Twenty- Writing for Love

Day 20 of our 30 Days of Writing for Love challenge is here! We hope you've been having an easy time and that the words have flowed like milk and honey in the Promised Land. If that's not the case, congratulations: you're normal. It's okay if everything doesn't go smoothly, but that doesn't mean it's not frustrating.

If you find yourself stressing out over the writing process, you may need to take a quick break. The key to taking a writing break is to not get too far away from the idea of writing while you give your brain a rest.

Here are a few simple ways you can stay in the writing groove while taking a break from your story.

1) Pen a letter.

No really.

When was the last time you sat down a wrote a real letter using paper? Quick review: Paper is a product which widely populated the pre-technology buzz era. It's usage died down circa 2005, but it is still available for purchase in some remote parts of the world such as Office Depot. Hunt down some paper and pour your heart out to someone. Whether you send the letter or not, writing to someone you know helps you tap into the habit of intimate communication. Writing a story is nothing if not intimate communication with your readers. So go on a paper scavenger hunt, and get started on that letter.

You're a writer. It's time to stop fighting the feeling. Write. In a diary. Ok? Ok.

You're a writer. It's time to stop fighting the feeling. Write. In a diary. Ok? Ok.

2) Write in your diary or journal.

You're a writer; so the "I don't have a diary or journal" thing is no longer acceptable. Head to your local bookstore and pick up one of those little books. Then pour your heart into it. Some of your best stories and ideas will come directly from those pages.

3) Read your diary.

This is one of the most effective ways to turn on your emotional side, a side that is necessary in convincingly writing. If you can't tap into emotion, you can't tap into the reader's emotions either. Thus your story will be limited to superficiality, and the reader, agent or publisher will skip your story for one which connects on a deeper level.

Our joy at willwriteforlove.com is to provide you with unconventional methods which work like magic. There's much more where that came from. Click here for more information on our story development services.

Try these out today, and take mental notes of your results. Did you find any of the three methods to be way more effective than another? Tell us in the comments section below. Let's compare notes!

Day Sixteen- Writing for Love

Do you realize you're halfway through the 30 day writing challenge??? You're almost there! After you finish this challenge, there's nothing that can stop you. Remember to start where you are, do what you can, and push past your limits. No regrets about the time that has already passed, the opportunities you may have missed, or the words that could have been better. You are right here, right now, and you still have an amazing opportunity to wow yourself. Don't allow past disappointments or fear keep you from making your dreams come true.

Right now, make a decision to do all you can to succeed. We'll help you in any way possible, but you've got to make your writing a priority.

Here are a few prioritizing tips:

1) Get your materials together.

2) Sit down.

3) Write.

This is tough love. You can do it; so get it done!

Until the next scene,

Day Fourteen- Writing for Love

So how's it going? I mean, really? How is your writing fitting into your schedule of priorities?

Sometimes it's really tough. We all have schedules to keep and people to meet, but our writing requires some "me-time" as well. With the itinerary of priorities we create everyday, we tend to leave off the things that are unessential. Maybe the only way to make sure we write everyday is to make it a priority. That's why we created this 30 day challenge

First off: it's free. Who doesn't like a contest without a price?

Secondly: it can help you get exposure if you win the top prize by submitting your FREE WillWriteForLove Word Counter at the end of the challenge. If there is even ONE word count entered on the form, you automatically get entered for a chance to win some priceless exposure.

Last but most importantly: writing everyday is a really good practice if you're serious about this. So we encourage you to make writing a part of your priority "to-do" list.

Need more help getting from "to-do" to "already-done"?? We have some helpful tips right here. Make sure you do whatever you can to prioritize your writing. The world is dying to see how brilliant you really are!

Day Thirteen- Writing for Love

Day 13 of our Writing for Love Challenge has arrived. Maybe you missed a couple of days. Whatever your reason, we're sure it was a good one. Or ice cream. We're not judging.

It's not the easiest thing in the world to write for thirty days straight. We get it. Sometimes you just need a day on a hammock. We took a couple, and wouldn't you know it: The world didn't end.

It's a new day now, and we're here to help you get off your hammock and back on the horse. Here are a few tips:

  1. Remember why you started. What was it about this story that drew you in and made you want to write it above and beyond every other story? Try to rekindle that flame and dive back in.
  2. Remember why you stopped. Was it school? Work? The kids? The significant other? What got in the way? Whatever it was, removing it may not be an option. You can, however, plan around it. If the kids have an event every week, try to sneak in a moment or two before or after. If your job ties you up until after hours, maybe you can sneak in a couple of minutes as soon as you wake up. The sacrifice will eventually pay off.
  3. Think of whether or not it’s worth it. If your answer is “no”, say no more. But if there’s any reason why you should continue writing, continue writing. The world needs to see how talented and brilliant you really are. Don’t deny that talent because of fear or guilt about the time you have wasted. Make up for lost time by starting again right now!

Get back on the horse, because we want to see those stories in our upcoming writing contest! Make sure you bring your A game!

Day Nine- Writing for Love

What Are You Waiting For??

You're almost through day nine, and you've probably hit and missed some of your writing goals. Good for you if you're one of the few writers who always hits the target. If you're like me and you miss a couple every now and then, I have some good news:

It's ok.

Don't beat yourself up. My Word Counter has a few more blank days than I would like and a few more low-number days too. That's ok, because I know that what I've written is quality (or at least it will be once it's edited). The same probably goes for you. You've written some great stuff! Believe that.

And if you haven't started yet, it's never too late. Request our free Word Counter by emailing us here. Anyone who even ATTEMPTS to write everyday will be entered into our contest. The coveted prize is a mini-exposé on willwriteforlove.com. That means we're basically giving you free advertising for a month. Let me tell you: If you ever want to sell a book, you should be branding yourself now. Later is too late.

Missed a couple of days? Started the challenge late? It's okay; we'll still send you a FREE Willwriteforlove.com Word Counter when you request it here. No questions asked. If you write for even ONE day during the challenge, we'll enter you into the contest. It's that simple.

We know you're trying. We just want to give you a little incentive to try harder. The world isn't going to wait for your brilliant story. So what are you waiting for? Write right now!
